In a May 1963 ABC News special on Cuba, Fidel Castro told correspondent Lisa Howard that he considered a rapprochement with Washington possible "if the United States government wishes". Ms. Howard, who enjoyed a comfortable relationship with Cuban leader, began to play the important role of intermediary in a secret dialogue between President John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro.
